Happy New Year. Here's my last post of the year. And it's about the Birds of Prey TV series. I've watched up to episode 11 so far, so there's somethings that I can't really comment on yet. This part will only be about the characters, I'll get to the series itself tomorrow. (This got so long.)

(Alfred gives a quick narrative about the three main characters at the beginning of every ep, BTW.)

This is set in New Gotham. Old Gotham was destroyed, the show never said how (or if it did, I missed it).

In this version, Huntress is Helena Kyle, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. She was raised by Selina, who gave up her life of crime to raiser Helena. Helena didn't know who her father was and vice versa. Selina was killed the same night the Joker paralyzed Barbara. He sent out someone to murder her, along with ahooting Babs, to get back at Batman. Bats quit and left. Helena was adopted by Babs and soon found out who her father was. I don't think Bats ever found out.

Helena is half-metahuman. She has cat-like abilities that she inherited from Selina. And you can definitely tell Helena is Selina's daughter. It's the personality, most of the time it just strikes me as very Catwoman. She also does the Bat-thing of disappearing that split-second you look away from her. She works as a bartender. She refuses to have with pretty much anything to do with her father.

Babs' origin is very much like the comics version. She was Batgirl, was shot by the Joker and was paralyzed from the waist-down. But, she became Oracle and set up the Birds of Prey to replace Batman (who is no longer fighting crime) and clean up crime in New Gotham. She's a schoolteacher at New Gotham High.

Babs is quite awesome. I wasn't too sure at first, and I really haven't read too much of the BoP comics, but I like this Babs. In one ep she used a thingy to help her walk, but weakened her and could possibly make her paralysis worse. Earlier, she came up with another thingy (scientific word there) that moved her chair by thought. She gains a relationship with a fellow teacher. (Subplot.) There is some Drama here with his parent disapproving of their relationship because she's in a wheelchair. The teacher (I don't remember his name) is a really good guy and stays with her. [EDIT: Wade. His name's Wade.]

Dinah is a metahuman. She has "touch-telepathy" (that's what they call it in the series), and telekinesis. Her mother, Carolyn Lance, (the first Black Canary) gave her away when she was six for her [Dinah's] safety. Dinah didn't know her mother was the Black Canary. Dinah's foster parents treated her horribly because she is a meta (not her mother's fault, she didn't know). Because of her telepahy, Dinah "witnessed" what happened to Babs and Helena the night the Joker took his revenge in her dreams. Years later, she ran away to New Gotham to find them.

Admittedly, I was a bit iffy about teenage Dinah. I understand the need for a Naive Newcomer. (Warning: TV Tropes.) But, she got better as the series went on. She became a decent fighter, and not annoying. She and Helena have a sisterly relationship. So far (as of episode 11), she doesn't go by Black Canary, I don't think she even has a superhero name. Yet, at least.

Alfred? is awesome. (When is he not?) Since Bruse is gone and Helena refuses to pretty much have anything to do with her father, he works for the Birds of Prey - he does pretty much what he did when he worked for Bruce.

Dr. Harleen Qunzel is the big bad mastermind of the series. She's a psychiatrist for dangerous criminals, like her cartoon/comic self, and the lover of the Joker. She's, also, Helena's psychiatrist, after Helena did some crime-fighting as Helena - she damaged some public property and has some anger issues. After the Joker was caught, he wasn't placed in Arkham (officals here are actually smart) but carted off to a high-security prison. She spends the series trying to get him back.

Harley, it doesn't seem, was the Joker's sidekick, as she was in the cartoon/comics. She was simply the Joker's lover. She is insane, and it gets more and more obvious as the show goes on.

Detective Jesse Reese encounters Huntress early in the series. He quickly becomes, very obviously, her love interest. He's a series-only character, so I don't have too much to say about him. One ep, we find out that his father is the head of a very powerful crime family in New Gotham, and because of this, Reese becomes a cop. Reese is probably one of the only good cops in New Gotham. He's a decent character, overall. A lot happens with their relationship and Helena gradually reveals more about herself throughout the series. By ep 11 He learns her real name.

(The last episode that I'm watched (ep 11) is a cage-match between female metas. Wasn't there a JLU ep that had something like that. Did it feature a fight b/t Huntress and Black Canary? *checks* Yes, there was an ep. "Grudge Match". I have this one on DVD. But I don't remember watching it.)

Also? Gotham Girls? Isn't too bad for a web-animated series.

All-in-all, the series isn't too bad. I'll give an actual review of it tomorrow, this got too long. I'm probably missing somethings. If so, or you just want to know something, ask.
(This really got long.)

See you next year. ;)
