Problem

I have a huge problem. The memory stick that has all of my fics and art and everything else saved on isn't working. I tried it on the PC and got a message saying that it was malfunctioning. I'm going to talk to my dad about it later and have him take a look at it and see what happens.

I just hope that I didn't lose anything (and I think I did). Because that means I lost the next two chapters to Rumor Has It, the next chapter and a half to In Another Reality, and other ficlets that I haven't gotten around to posting.

Yeah, not happy right now.

EDIT: *is feeling less distressed now* I'm still a little miffed that I lost a couple chapters that I had just written (wrote them over the weekend). So, no fics for a week or two.
(As I said in a comment below, I can deal with losing the files. It's just those new chapters and a few select other fics that I'm a bit PO'ed for losing. That and the face that I can't even use the memory stick at all now.)

I really, really don't mean to be rude, but that's why you need to learn to back things up. Burn to media, hide in online email, or in some shareware account you don't tell people.. but if you don't back your stuff up, you WILL lose it.
I learned the hard way too back in 1998 when my harddrive crashed without warning and took everything I had.

Make backups. There are ways for everyone to do it.

Y'see that's the thing. The past couple of days I've been going through all of my files, on my laptop and what I've saved to memory stick, and doing just that. (Something I've been meaning to do for a while now, but I've had a lot of things to do these past few weeks.) I already have everything on my laptop backed up and it automatically backs my files up every week. *shrugs*

Honestly, I can deal with losing most of what was on that stick because I can find nearly everything I saved on there that was important somewhere else/online and I can re-scan any of my drawings that haven't been posted. It's just hose few chapters that I had just written this last weekend that I'm a little miffed at losing.

(That and the fact that I didn't sleep very well last night probably didn't help my mood much. *caffeine has made me feel a bit better*)

oh, that´s bad. Really bad.
You should try some paranoia; I´ve saved my fic-files on my external harddrive and burn them occasionally on CDs...
yes, overkill, but considering my history with computers and technology...wise decision after all.

I have a similar problem like you with my last mp3-player. It was a really fancy one I got for christmas, but on one day it was broken after I wanted to upload more files on it. It still plays the music, but whenever I plug it in, my computer claims that this drive is corrupted and non-readable. The weird part is that he recognizes the drive the moment I´m unplugging it.
I think I know the reason why: the connection between computer and the USB was not properly severed (sadly my pc crashed and I removed the mp3-player afterwards and that was what caused it to malfunction.)
I guess that something similar might have happened, that you didn´t close the connection from pc to stick properly (or that the pc messed it up).
I hope your dad can get it to work.

I don't know what had happened or why it's not working. But what you said could be it. *shrugs* Just have to wait and see, I guess.

Well I will give you a big long hug and a cup of tea. And a buttertart.

Here's hoping the chapters reestablish their hold on you and come out better than ever, I hate the frustration of rewriting something you already did but it does leave room for improvement and we your audience can wait with pitchforks and chains ^_^

My husband (who's in IT) says there's supposedly software out there that retrieves files on wonky memory sticks, but says he hasn't done any research on it. Maybe you can do a quick search and see if it's something easily done.

He suggested looking up 'Flash recovery' in Google.

Sorry to hear about your problems, I dread having that happen myself...
